Program goals
The Mercy Health System Family Medicine Residency Program seeks to produce competent family medicine attendings who successfully balance the needs of their career with their own personal needs.
The majority of the resident's three-year experience will be spent providing family medicine, supervised by a family medicine faculty member. The full spectrum of family medicine will be taught through hands-on experience in the inpatient, outpatient, nursing home, hospice, and home settings.
All competencies necessary for success as a family physician will be taught including practice management. The residents will function as partners in the practice, making business decisions, and working on solutions in real time.
Traditionally, residencies train medical students to be residents, leaving them on their own to learn how to be attendings. Any health plan administrato will tell you that it typically takes a new residency graduate one or two years to learn the skills necessary to be a successful attending. Our residency is committed to training successful medical students to be successful attendings while they are still in residency.
